What will tech companies look like in 10 years?

The sharpest technology companies reinvent themselves every three to four years. As you read this, a manmade rover vehicle is maneuvering through the Martian landscape 175 million miles away, and artificial intelligence is gathering predictive-behavior information with every keystroke. Considering what is possible today, can you begin to imagine what the workplace will look like in 10 years?

AI and the data-driven workplace
While today just 10 percent of U.S. companies use artificial intelligence, the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning will be undeniable in a decade. Algorithms designed to comb through reams of digital data at lightning speed will assist business leaders in making decisions as simple as when to order more coffee for the breakroom, and as complex as guiding product developers to anticipate consumer needs and meet them with incredible speed and efficiency.

Zero downtime
Fiber networks with zero downtime will be commonplace while operating at record-shattering speeds. No, that doesn’t mean a 24-hour workday—but it does mean the AI and operational engines working behind the scenes will collect information and enable instant transactions continuously. Automated diagnosis and self-healing networks will be the norm as downtime disappears.

Seamless app integration
Brands like Apple and Google have built entire product ecosystems that play an integral role in our personal and working lives. One of the ongoing complaints from users, though, is how these systems are closed to third-party devices. Imagine walking into a shared workspace and having all your devices sync to the network instantly. Seamless app integration in the workplace, based in some part on open-source or shared designs in which strategically linked companies work together, could intuitively connect you to any space in the years to come.

Social media’s evolution
Many prognosticators see a reckoning coming for social media platforms and the reckless ways organizations can manipulate users with false or misleading information. That could mean major ramifications for the future. Will regulations break up the dominant platforms of today, and what would fill the void? Will membership-based platforms or micro-niche apps highlight divisions, or will we agree on a different type of playing field? Think about what that might mean for the relationships you build with colleagues inside and outside the office.
