It’s true. We love our smartphones—especially in Mississippi, where we spend more than five and a half hours on them, on average, every day. That’s 35 percent more than the global average, and if compared to countries around the world, it would make us No. 2 just behind the Philippines. (The entire U.S. ranks No. 27 with 3.5 hours/day.)
As you see, we have plenty of reasons to constantly monitor the C Spire wireless network. But ensuring our customers have a positive experience takes more than monitoring and maintenance. It takes proactive steps to enhance that experience through adding more capacity and coverage.
Sometimes that means towing our portable wireless towers to events where thousands of people are expected to gather—such as Mardi Gras and Black Spring Break on the Gulf Coast, plus other major events around the state. Those temporary solutions allow us to maintain a typical day’s traffic on the network, as well as the revelers live streaming and posting pics and videos to their social profiles.
Here’s where we’ve enhanced the network around the state in recent weeks.
North Mississippi
Charleston, population 2,651, doesn’t seem like a place where wireless network traffic would be particularly high, but demand has been consistently strong in this community on the edge the Delta. We have added a new site here.
Also in the Delta region, new cells near our Clarksdale retail store are bolstering capacity in the surrounding area, and work near the North Sunflower Medical Center in Ruleville is helping customers at the center and throughout the community. Heading Northeast, we also have new cells near our Booneville C Spire retail store on the North side of town, and in Calhoun County at Sarepta.
Central Mississippi
In 2021, we brought a portable tower to the Neshoba County Fairgrounds near Philadelphia to help with network traffic from the annual fair, which attracts 25,000 attendees each year. For the 2022 event, though, we greatly expanded the capacity—by 450 percent—with nine times more high-speed, high-capacity carriers. Over in Greenwood, we added a cell site to handle increased traffic on the North side of the city.
Across the region, we have also made significant additions to our network in Mendenhall; Sylvarena and Summerland in Smith County; Camden and Canton in Madison County; Wesson in Copiah County; and Dalewood in Lauderdale County.
South Mississippi
More than half of Mississippians live in rural areas, and almost everyone travels through them. So, it makes sense to ensure coverage and capacity in these areas. In Southeastern Mississippi, we recently installed new, large cells in Leakesville and in Western Greene County.
As you may have read recently, C Spire has invested a lot in our network around schools this year. We have added to that mission with two new cells at St. Martin High School, one at the community’s Middle School, and one each at D’Iberville High School and Columbia High School, which will provide enhanced coverage and capacity, and higher speeds throughout the campus areas. We also added a new site in Lincoln County near I-55, Bogue Chitto and Summit to enhance coverage for locals and those traveling through the area.
