Most of us have meditated a time or two, but how about being mindful?

Just like meditation, practicing mindfulness can help improve your physical, mental and emotional health. Mindfulness is a type of meditation, with your focus being in the moment—being very aware of what you are sensing and feeling right then.

“Mindfulness is about taking a non-judgmental approach to your inner experience,” said Dr. Danny Burgess, University of Mississippi Medical Center professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Integrative Health. “Instead of judging or criticizing your thoughts and emotions, take on a stance of curiosity and understanding.”

Relaxing your body and mind through mindfulness can help reduce stress, anxiety, pain, depression, insomnia and high blood pressure, and some research shows it can help people who cope with asthma and fibromyalgia. It also can help you better balance your thoughts and emotions.

Dr. Danny BurgessIt’s easy to practice mindfulness. “Start with simple, non-emotional tasks, such as brushing your teeth or showering,” Burgess said. “Practice being mindful in those situations by paying attention to the experiences of your senses.

“After some practice, you can then apply mindfulness to more complex situations that are emotionally challenging,” Burgess said. “Be mindful by living in the moment. Pay attention to what you do and find joy in the simple pleasures.”

Many mindfulness exercises can be done anywhere, from home to office to anywhere you can find that has a minimum of distractions or interruptions.

Although mental positivity can help with overall health, minor medical issues can sneak up on anyone at any time. But help is waiting right on your smart phone. The C Spire Health app gives you access to everyday urgent care, non-emergency visits with a UMMC provider. Appointments are available from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays.
