Flu shots are recommended for most adults and children, but what about a pneumonia shot?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adult patients and parents of small children discuss the pneumococcal vaccine (PCV) with their providers. Different types of the vaccine are recommended for groups that include children younger than 2; people ages 2 and up with certain health conditions; older adults; and adults who smoke cigarettes.

“Pneumococcal disease is more common in children and the elderly, but certain adults who smoke or have chronic illnesses or a weak immune system can get serious infections,” said Dr. Bhagyashri Navalkele, Medical director the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Pneumonia-causing bacteria is contagious, can make you have fever, chills, cough, difficulty breathing and chest pain, and can lead to infections in the lungs, lining of the brain and in the blood.

“Pneumococcal vaccine can prevent severe pneumococcal disease. Be sure and talk to your provider about any conditions which would preclude you from getting the shot,” Navalkele said.
