“Please let this serve as the last time #infosec and #ROI are used in the same sentence. It's just not the way it works nor good KPI,” Tweets info security guru Aaron Lancaster (aka TekLinks’ Information Security Team Lead).
Aaron’s tweet comes in reaction to a CIO story on IT leaders picking productivity over security at a surprising rate.
CIO based much of its info on a report in which 350 IT pros were surveyed to gauge top security concerns for 2016 and how confident IT leaders are when it comes to cybersecurity issues.
“For business leaders, the biggest motivation for implementing new process, procedures, or expanding budgets boils down to how much money they can make on the initiative,” says CIO. And 54 percent of the surveyed IT professionals have low confidence in their company's ability to demonstrate the ROI of security.
To that we humbly quip, “Exactly.”
Security has nothing to do with a company making money (ROI) and everything to do minimizing losses. Think insurance.
