It’s not always easy to find an activity for everyone in the house to enjoy together, but family game night just leveled up with this year’s best family-friendly video game selections. From immersive open-world builders to trivia and word games, the hours will fly by while you run, jump and smack-talk your way through each stage.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder
It’s been quite the year for Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom, with the iconic Nintendo franchise making the jump from video games to the big screen. But it’s back to the 2D game format with the recently released Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the fastest-selling Mario Bros. title yet. The classic game style will remind parents of the level structures they grew up playing, as Mario and his crew venture across the Mushroom Kingdom in yet another battle with Bowser. The youngsters, however, will appreciate the vibrant, modern graphics that depict a revamped story updated for modern tastes. With up to four simultaneous players and a wide range of characters, this latest Mario Bros. installment provides multiple ways to play with various difficulties so the whole family will enjoy. This title is exclusively available on the Nintendo Switch console.

Jackbox
For a more traditional game night, Jackbox serves up a multitude of mini games that vary among trivia, wordplay, opinion and design based. Rather than getting lost in an online world, Jackbox encourages a more social approach to gaming, with many of the games allowing up to eight players and the ability to play in-person or remotely. With ten volumes to choose from, each with five different games, Jackbox is terrific for those who enjoy playing in a fun, fast-paced atmosphere. For the classic experience, start with the Jackbox Party Pack 3. Available on any gaming platform and with the ability to use phones as controllers, Jackbox is one of the most accessible and versatile game series around.

Minecraft
With its open-world design and user-friendly play style, Minecraft is an online game that accommodates many different skills and interests. It’s no surprise then that it's the best-selling video game of all time. The possibilities are endless in a world where players collect building materials and craft whatever their creativity can conceive. Minecraft is available on nearly every platform, so players can play regardless of device, so long as they have internet connection. In 2020, the Minecraft universe expanded with Minecraft Dungeons, a traditional adventure game that is focused on cave exploration and treasure hunting. This mode is more objective-driven than the original Minecraft title and is a great multiplayer option for families with younger kids.

Mario Party Superstars
Returning to the Mushroom Kingdom, this time in a unique mini-game mashup format, Mario Party Superstars presents new challenges with a familiar group of characters. Less story driven and more focused on the social aspects of gaming, players traverse across different board game-themed maps, competing in mini games to collect stars and thwart competition. Featuring over 100 mini games and four player multiplayer options, Mario Party Superstars will bring out the competitive spirit of the entire family.
