Our kids are more impressionable than we sometimes like to think. That’s why setting a positive example for them to follow is so important. In order for those good habits to stick, parents have to walk the talk — and that includes being mindful of how you use technology when they're around. Here are some tips to follow.

Set device-free times
Set aside times when devices are off limits, such as during meals, chores, homework or bedtime. You can also designate completely device-free zones, like the dinner table.

Turn off notifications
Turn off non-urgent alerts on your devices, like social media notifications, so you're not tempted to pick up your phone as often. You can also put your phone in “do not disturb” mode during family time, but still allow calls from certain contacts.

Limit your own screen time
Set goals for how you want to use your phone when you're spending time with family, and use apps like Moment or Screen Time to track your usage.

Don't multitask
Try not to use your phone while you're doing other things, and set it down when your child asks you a question. You can also explain what you're doing with your device, like looking up a recipe or texting someone, so they understand you’re not simply scrolling.
