Every year, the latest connected devices make a play for space on our Christmas lists. And while they are definitely efficient, entertaining tools that we rely on daily, those same devices can also distract us from spending quality time with family and friends.

Finding ways to unplug and enjoy meaningful moments with family during the holidays can strengthen bonds and create lasting memories.

Here are some ideas to help put down the screens and enjoy quality time together.

Screen-free zones and times
Get started by establishing specific areas in the house where screens are not allowed, such as the dining room during meals or the living room during a game night. These designated zones can help emphasize that there are appropriate times and places for screen use, highlighting that holidays are for connecting with loved ones.

Play games offline
Classic board games like Monopoly, Scrabble and Pictionary are great ways to bring together family and friends for a night of offline fun. Don’t have that kind of time? Card games such as Uno, go-fish and even poker can be fun without committing an entire evening. And don’t overlook more laid-back activities, like collaborating on a large puzzle.

Cooking and baking together
Family gatherings are an opportunity to pull out your favorite recipes, so invite your guests to participate in the prep — or even a recipe swap. For more excitement, you can turn holiday baking into a friendly competition by hosting a bake-off, where everyone creates a treat and someone acts as the judge.

Outdoor adventures
Reconnect with loved ones by exploring nearby parks or hiking trails, or by organizing a scavenger hunt in the neighborhood or backyard. Playing family-friendly sports like soccer, basketball or frisbee is another great way to spend time together. If the weather suits you, head outside to roast marshmallows or a backyard campout with the kids.

Crafts and creative projects
Get into the festive spirit with a creative project like making decorations, ornaments or homemade cards together. Hosting a family art night where everyone picks a medium, such as drawing or painting a picture or even playing musical instruments, to get everyone to express their artistic sides. Or, pull out the old family photos and mementos and create a memory scrapbook, preserving special moments and memories as a family.

Sharing stories and family history
Use the time with extended family members to learn about your family history. Memory sharing, where each family member can reflect on their favorite holiday or other memory, is a good way to reconnect. Not sure where to start? Create a conversation jar filled with interesting questions on slips of paper, allowing everyone to take turns pulling one out and answering it.

Volunteer as a family
Engaging in charity work together, such as volunteering at a food bank, homeless shelter or animal rescue, can be a meaningful way for families to bond while helping others in their community. Attending or helping out at local holiday events can also strengthen connections with both family and the wider community, fostering a sense of togetherness during the season.

Holiday traditions
Does your family have any holiday traditions, like hay riding or going caroling? Maybe this is the year you create one. Hosting a family talent show can add to the festivities and give everyone a chance to showcase their talents, whether it's music, dancing or even telling jokes. Or, initiate a gratitude circle — where each person takes a moment to share something they are thankful for or a wish they have for the coming year — can set the right tone for a family gathering.

All you need is a little imagination to make lasting memories with family and friends. Putting down the screens and focusing on group activities like these can make the holidays more enjoyable and meaningful.
